Current Assessment
The estimate is anchored to Bloomberg's May 2026 Billionaires Index profile, which put Thiel at $22.8 billion and identified Palantir as his largest asset. Bloomberg says he owns about 4% of Palantir and also counts private venture economics, cash investments and proceeds from PayPal and Facebook. ProPublica's IRS-files reporting adds an important caveat: Thiel had a Roth IRA worth about $5 billion at the end of 2019, showing that a large part of his wealth sits in tax-advantaged and private structures that are hard to value from public filings alone.
Key caveats
- The biggest moving part is Palantir's share price after Bloomberg's May 18, 2026 valuation date.
- Venture fund economics and family-office holdings are not fully public.
- Historical PayPal and Facebook proceeds are not added directly because much of that capital was reinvested and may already be included in external estimates.
Evidence gaps
- Current EDGAR beneficial-ownership reconciliation for all Thiel-controlled Palantir vehicles.
- Exact debt tied to pledged Palantir shares.
- Current private marks for Founders Fund, Thiel Capital and Rivendell entities.
